1966-1967
SCASP Founded
USC students draft the first constitution. SCASP is officially established in the fall of 1967 with Ron McWhirt as the first president, predating NASP by two years.
1973
First Newsletter
SCASP publishes its first official newsletter, The School Psych Scene, replacing informal presidential letters.
1976
NASP Affiliation
SCASP officially affiliates with the National Association of School Psychologists, broadening its national footprint.
1977-1978
Advocacy & Education
SCASP advocates for handicapped services in the political arena. Winthrop University gains approval for its Specialist Degree.
1983
Certification Upgrades
Successful advocacy efforts lead to upgraded state certification standards for school psychologists, including internship provisions.
1986
School Psychology Week
Governor Dick Riley proclaims the first South Carolina School Psychology Week, establishing an annual tradition of recognition.
1994-1998
LPES Licensure
A multi-year legislative campaign successfully establishes non-doctoral licensure and creates the Licensed Psycho-Educational Specialist (LPES) title.
2008
NCSP Reciprocity
SCASP successfully advocates for the State Department of Education to grant certification reciprocity for the Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential.
2012
Digital Transition
The School Psych Scene transitions to a fully electronic publication for all members.
