Director's Job Responsibilities/Duties

Director's Report
By Sandra C. Manning
August 2007

Another school year is underway and SCASP is prepared to help you do a better job in your position. Our Fall Conference is October 17-19 at Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia. The pre-conference workshops are on the timely topics of RTI Implementation and Autism Spectrum Disorders. I also am very excited about the 40th Anniversary Celebration which will be held on Thursday night at the Embassy Suites. A wine and cheese reception will start immediately after the workshop. Then we will move into the celebration. Rhonda Armistead, President of NASP, will be our special guest.

At Spring Conference we raised $5042 at the auction. Each region will have $840 to distribute to an organization that works with children and/or families in their area. Some of the organizations that received a donation from SCASP in 2006 are: Tuesday’s Child in Rock Hill, Billy Hardee Home for Boys in Darlington, Britton’s Neck Elementary School, and The Children’s Garden in Columbia. Every region made a donation. If you know of a worthy program or organization that works to benefit children and families please let you regional representative on the Board know about it. Each year the regional representative looks for worthy causes to support in their region.

The 2007-08 SCASP Board will see some returning faces as well as some new ones. Welcome back to Naomi Palmer who has been appointed to serve as Past President this year. Naomi has previously served as Treasurer and President of SCASP. Susan Beck will serve as President-Elect. Jan Harbison, SCASP President 1996-97, will serve as the regional representative from the Low Country region. Rebecca Gill, the previous Piedmont representative, has moved to Rock Hill and will serve as the Catawba representative. Two new members are Melissa Hullett, Regional Representative for the Greenwood region, and Ashley Lewis a student at USC who is the student representative to the Board.

A big, big thank you to outgoing Board members Ruth Freedenberg, Lynn Collins, Anita Gore, and Blair Edwards. Lynn will continue to serve as the Chair of the Children’s Services Committee and be in charge of the auction at Spring Conference.
Have a wonderful year and I will see you at Fall Conference.

Executive Director's Duties

What do I do? I assist the President with anything he or she needs or wants me to do. I pay all the bills and respond to the mail and telephone calls. I have been assigned specific duties to assist other Board members and committee chairs.

I assist the Treasurer in maintaining the budget and in collecting and depositing all revenue for the Association.

I assist the Membership Chair by maintaining all the membership information and sending out membership renewal notices. I now publish and distribute a membership directory once a year.

I assist the Program Chair with making the arrangements with the hotel for our conferences, coordinating registration and doing anything else they may need as last minute emergencies and details come up.

I assist the Legislative Chair by representing SCASP at hearings or meetings at the State House, the State Department of Education or at other Associations or Agencies.

I maintain a lot of historical information and artifacts for SCASP. In fact, I was looking through some papers someone gave me and I found my original application for membership in SCASP when I was a student.

In 1996, with the resignation of the Newsletter Editor, the Board asked me to assume those duties. As newsletter editor, I collect, encourage, and sometimes harass people for articles and information. I arrange for it to be printed and then mail it to all SCASP members, all School District Superintendents, the State Superintendent of Education, the Governor, other Associations in the state, and all other school psychology newsletter editors in the country along with some NASP officers and officials. If you would like to help with the newsletter in some way, please let me know.

This is what you pay me to do and I am here to assist YOU and the Board in maintaining and increasing a very professional and visible presence in this state.
