Executive Director’s Report
By Sandra C. Manning, Ph.D., NCSP
April 2009

Spring Conference is over and we had great workshops, lots of fun, and great food. The continuation of the Psychopathology workshop with Dr. Melissa Reeves for those taking it for 3 hours credit will be April 17-18, 2009 at Winthrop. Next year, our conferences will be scaled down to reflect the reality of the economy and the effect it has had on conference participation and on the SCASP budget. We are finalizing plans for the Fall Conference in Columbia on a Friday and Saturday. There will be one full day workshop on Friday and a keynote and break-out sessions on Saturday. We will let you know the dates as soon as they are finalized. We will not be meeting at a hotel but will arrange special rates at a hotel for those who need or want to spend the night.

This year Maria Bernard and KayLeigh Sockrider were in charge of the auction and there were a lot of great items to bid on. Margaret Greer-Simmons was the auctioneer. We raised over $2500 to be distributed throughout the state. Some of the organizations that received a donation this year are: Low Country Food Bank, South Carolina Special Olympics, and Boys Farm, Inc.

Congratulations to USC student Jessica Carfolite Williams who was awarded the $1200 Ralph Tindal Research Award. Jessica was the student scholarship winner last year. Elizabeth Hiller, a student at the Citadel, was awarded the Student Scholarship. Liz wrote, “A million thank yous for choosing me to be the SCASP Student scholarship winner. It was a real honor to receive such a generous gift.”

Congratulations also to Beth Lowman. She received SCASP’s award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of School Psychology. Beth is currently teaching school psychology at the Citadel. She is a longtime member of SCASP, a SCASP Past President and Treasurer, and is currently co-chair of the program committee.

I am looking for spring weather! What about you?

Executive Director's Duties

What do I do? I assist the President with anything he or she needs or wants me to do. I pay all the bills and respond to the mail and telephone calls. I have been assigned specific duties to assist other Board members and committee chairs.

I assist the Treasurer in maintaining the budget and in collecting and depositing all revenue for the Association.

I assist the Membership Chair by maintaining all the membership information and sending out membership renewal notices. I now publish and distribute a membership directory once a year.

I assist the Program Chair with making the arrangements with the hotel for our conferences, coordinating registration and doing anything else they may need as last minute emergencies and details come up.

I assist the Legislative Chair by representing SCASP at hearings or meetings at the State House, the State Department of Education or at other Associations or Agencies.

I maintain a lot of historical information and artifacts for SCASP. In fact, I was looking through some papers someone gave me and I found my original application for membership in SCASP when I was a student.

In 1996, with the resignation of the Newsletter Editor, the Board asked me to assume those duties. As newsletter editor, I collect, encourage, and sometimes harass people for articles and information. I arrange for it to be printed and then mail it to all SCASP members, all School District Superintendents, the State Superintendent of Education, the Governor, other Associations in the state, and all other school psychology newsletter editors in the country along with some NASP officers and officials. If you would like to help with the newsletter in some way, please let me know.

This is what you pay me to do and I am here to assist YOU and the Board in maintaining and increasing a very professional and visible presence in this state.
